The Carnival 전시는 공주문화관광재단 ‘2024 청년예술인 활동지원사업’에 선정된 김형수 작가가 기획하여 선보이는 디지털 아트 그룹전이다. <The Carnival> 전시는 김형수 작가의 작품 10점과 김영현, 이종찬 작가의 작품 1점씩도 함께 전시되며 공주시 대통길작은미술관에서 개최된다.

본 전시는 디지털 아트 그룹전으로 무규정적이고 무규범적인 감각적인 축제의 의미를 지니고 있다. 니체의 말을 빌려 디오니소스적인 축제라 할 수 있을 것이다. 이는 이성적이며 질서, 조화, 균형을 추구하는 예술의 속성인 아폴론적 축제, 즉 ‘Festival’과 대조되는 의미로써 상징과 의미를 담은 서사구조로부터 벗어나 물질의 영역을 탐구하며 시각적 감각을 선사하기 위한 작가의 이념을 전시 타이틀을 통해 표출하고 있기도 하다.

작가는 The Carnival 전시를 통해 의도된 것, 구상적인 것으로부터 탈피한 순수한 물질, 감각의 놀이를 움직임과 운동으로 표현함으로써 관람객들이 작품과 마주하였을 때 각자 느끼는 바대로 느끼고 의미를 획득할 수 있기를 바란다고 전했다. 의미를 의도적으로 집어넣는다면, 의미에 매몰되어 느끼는 감각이 훼손될 수 있기에 이러한 구상적인 영역으로부터 탈피하기 위한 작품을 만드는 행동강령이라고 주장한다.

본 전시에서 선보이는 작품은 ‘시간-회화’라 불리는 움직이는 그림으로써, 효과나 서사에 치중된 기존 미디어아트와는 차별되는 회화적인 영역을 연구한 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 움직임과 운동이 회화에 개입되었을 때 어떻게 나타날 수 있는지를 탐색하고 연구하며 “운동-이미지”를 사용하여 감각을 구현해 보고자 하는 것이다. 세잔의 사과처럼 가장 단순하며 일상적인 것과 기본적인 형태에서부터 출발하여, 운동 터치와 운동 리듬으로 실험하여 ‘보데곤’이자 형상을 만들어 보고자 한다. 그런 의미에서 회화가 색과 터치를 통해 평면을 점유했던 평면성을 특징이라 한다면, 이 평면성을 시간에 적용한 의미로써 시간과 운동이 곧 회화가 될 수 있기에 ‘시간-회화’이자 ‘운동-회화’라 부를 수 있지 않을까? 작가는 운동을 통해 이루어지는 이 실험은 운동이 회화가 되도록 하는 것에 초점을 두고 있으며, 불분명하지만 완성될 어떤 지점이나 새로운 가능성을 만들어 보고자 회화 실험을 지속하고 있다.

The Carnival is a digital art group exhibition organized and curated by artist Kim Hyeongsoo, who was selected for the 2024 Young Artist Support Program by the Gongju Cultural Tourism Foundation. The exhibition features ten works by Kim Hyeongsoo, along with one work each by artists Kim Younghyun and Lee Jongchan, and is held at Daetong-gil Small Gallery in Gongju.

This exhibition embraces the essence of a digital art carnival—an undefined, unregulated, and sensorial celebration. Borrowing from Nietzsche, it could be described as a Dionysian festival, in contrast to the Apollonian ideal of rationality, harmony, and order often associated with traditional "festivals." By stepping away from symbolic or narrative-driven art, the exhibition delves into the material domain and offers a visual experience rooted in pure sensation.

Kim Hyeongsoo aims to express a playful exploration of pure material and sensory elements, free from fixed meaning or representation. Through movement and motion, he invites viewers to encounter each work in their own way—feeling and interpreting without constraint. The artist asserts that deliberately embedding meaning can obscure the viewer’s sensory experience; thus, his work is a declaration of intent to move away from figurative or representational forms.

The exhibited works are what Kim terms “Time-Paintings”—moving images that explore painterly possibilities within digital media. Unlike traditional media art focused on effects or narrative, these pieces investigate how movement and motion might become part of painting itself. Starting from the most basic and familiar of forms—much like Cézanne's apples—he experiments with motion-touch and rhythmic gestures to create bodegón-like still lifes and dynamic visual figures.

If traditional painting is defined by its flatness—its occupation of the surface through color and touch—Kim extends this concept into time. In this way, time and motion become the new medium of painting, giving rise to what he calls "Time-Painting" and "Motion-Painting." His ongoing experiments seek to explore the blurry edge where motion becomes painting, aiming to discover not a clearly defined end, but new possibilities in the painterly language of movement.
