표갤러리는 2024년 7월 26일 (금) – 2024년 8월 24일 (토) 김형수의 개인전 《운동繪》를 개최한다.

김형수 작가는 전통적인 재현보다는 새로운 창조에 중점을 두는 독특한 예술가이다. 그의 예술 철학은 단순히 대상을 재현하는 것이 아닌, 그 이상의 무언가를 만들어내는 데에 있다. 김형수는 2022년 (재)서울예술재단과 (주)표갤러리가 공동주최하는 제 6회 포트폴리오 박람회에서 세 차례의 심사를 거쳐 7인의 작가로 선정되어 단체전을 가졌으며 최종 심사에서 우수상을 수상했다.

특히, 김형수 작가의 작업은 영상의 미디어작업을 회화로 풀어내었다는 점에서 기발함을 기발하다고 할 수 있는데, 이러한 특징은 그의 작품에 독창성과 감각적 깊이를 더하고 있어 현대 미술의 경계를 확장하며 새로운 가능성을 탐구하는 중요한 지점에 있다고 본다.

그는 미술의 역사에서 재현의 역할이 이미 사진기에 의해 대체되었으며, 모더니즘 이후로는 새로운 것을 보여줘야 한다는 조건 속에서 재현은 관습적인 코드와 판에 박힌 형식에서 벗어나기 어렵다고 주장한다.

작가의 이러한 창조적 접근은 모더니즘 화가들의 기본적인 자세와 맥을 같이한다. 모더니즘은 관습을 답습하지 않고, 화가의 감각을 투입하여 물질 회화의 새로운 지점을 만들어냈다. 특히 폴 세잔 이후, 터치와 행위의 동작성은 회화에 물질적 흔적을 남겨 시간성과 감각을 동시에 느낄 수 있게 했다.

그는 이러한 터치와 행위가 물질적 흔적으로 남아 감각될 수 있다면, 운동 또한 움직이는 감각으로 회화에 접목될 수 있다고 주장하며 운동이 없다면 시간의 부피도 만들어지지 않으며 운동이 곧 시간이라는 점을 강조한다. 이를 통해 시간도 회화의 일부가 될 수 있다고 본다.

Pyo Gallery presents Movement-Painting, a solo exhibition by Kim Hyungsoo, held from July 26 (Fri) to August 24 (Sat), 2024.

Kim Hyungsoo is an artist who emphasizes new creation over traditional representation. His artistic philosophy centers on generating something beyond the mere reproduction of objects. In 2022, he was selected as one of seven finalists through a three-stage jury process at the 6th Portfolio Fair, co-hosted by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and Pyo Gallery. He was subsequently awarded the Excellence Prize in the final round.

Kim’s work is particularly remarkable in how it translates the medium of video into painting. This inventive approach adds originality and sensorial depth to his practice, positioning him at the forefront of expanding the boundaries of contemporary art and exploring new possibilities.

The artist argues that, since the invention of the camera, the role of representation in art has already been replaced, and since modernism, the demand has shifted toward showing something new. Within this condition, representation often remains confined to conventional codes and repetitive formats.

Kim's creative methodology resonates with the foundational attitudes of modernist painters. Modernism, rather than replicating convention, established a new domain of material painting by infusing the painter’s own sensory perception. Especially after Paul Cézanne, the dynamic quality of touch and gesture left material traces on the canvas, allowing viewers to experience both temporality and sensation simultaneously.

Kim contends that if touch and action can be sensorially perceived as material traces, then movement too can be incorporated into painting as a moving sensation. Without movement, there is no formation of temporal volume—movement is time itself. Through this belief, he proposes that time can also become an integral part of painting.

This experimental approach not only broadens Kim Hyungsoo’s artistic language but also marks a significant exploration into the new potentialities of painting. Amidst uncertainty, he continues his relentless pursuit of new directions through painterly experimentation. By expanding the boundaries of contemporary art, Kim devotes his practice to offering novel sensory experiences through artistic invention.
