2021년은 『감각의 논리』를 읽으며 '프란시스 베이컨'에 대해 깊이 사유했던 해로 기억된다. 이 작품의 초기 버전은 베이컨의 삼면화를 패러디한 형식으로 시작되었지만, “그가 그렇게 그렸다고 해서 따라 한다면 의미가 없다”는 스승님의 말에 따라 여러 차례 수정을 거쳤다.

현재의 형태는 베이컨의 삼면화를 패러디한 구조가 형상처럼 분명히 자리 잡고 있는 것이 특징이다. 이러한 형상의 앞뒤로 인물들이 지나가는 구성이 가능한 것도, 그것이 하나의 ‘형상’으로 기능하기 때문이다. 작가는 이 작업을 통해 패러디조차 형상으로 떨어뜨리려는 시도를 감행한다.

운동과 움직임이 일어나는 공간, 그리고 다양한 형상들이 관계 맺는 장으로서 이 작품은 ‘운동장’이라는 이름을 갖게 되었다.

The Sports Field

The year 2021 marks a time when the artist deeply contemplated Francis Bacon while reading The Logic of Sensation. The early version of this piece was structured as a parody of Bacon’s triptych format, but it underwent several revisions after the artist's mentor remarked, “It means nothing to imitate just because that’s how he painted.”

In its current form, the parody of Bacon’s triptych takes on a clear presence as a visual figure. What allows other figures to move in front of and behind this panel-like parody is precisely its status as a distinct form. This work embodies the artist’s attempt to reduce even parody into a tangible figure.

As a space where motion and activity unfold, and where various figures engage in dynamic interaction, this work came to be titled The Sports Field.
