나무공장

나무공장은 ‘공장!공장!공장!’ 전시에서 처음 선보인 작품이다. 흔히 작업실을 ‘화실’이라 부르지만, 그 말에는 그림을 그리는 공간이라는 인상이 담겨 있다. 반면 ‘공장’은 무언가를 끊임없이 만들어내는 장소다. '만들기'라는 행위를 중심으로 작업하는 나에게는, ‘공장’이라는 이름이 더 어울리는 것 같았다. 어쩌면 앤디 워홀이 자신의 작업장을 ‘팩토리’라고 부른 이유도 이와 같지 않았을까.

이 작품은 나무를 만들어내는 공장이 있다는 상상에서 시작되었다. 매 1분마다 공장의 장소가 바뀌며, 다양한 공장들의 리듬이 번갈아 등장한다. 나무들을 끊임없이 만들어내는 상상의 공장을 통해, 나 역시 다양한 리듬을 상상하고 실험하고자 했다. 이 작품에는 그런 꿈이 담겨 있다.

The Tree Factory

The Tree Factory was first introduced in the exhibition “Factory! Factory! Factory!”. Studios are often called ‘art rooms’, evoking the image of a place where painting happens. But a factory is a place where things are constantly made. Since my practice revolves around the act of making, I find the name ‘factory’ more fitting for my studio. Perhaps Andy Warhol felt the same when he named his workspace The Factory.

This work began with the idea of a factory that produces trees. Every minute, the location of the factory changes, revealing different rhythms of production. Through this imagined tree-producing factory, I wanted to explore and experiment with diverse rhythms. This piece holds that dream.
