사랑방은 공주에서 내가 자주 가던 술집의 이름에서 비롯되었다. ‘사랑방’이라는 이름은 술집과 묘하게 잘 어울린다. 술은 인간을 사회적 코드에서 벗어나게 만드는 직접적인 매개이며, 비록 내가 술이 쎈 편은 아니지만, 담배나 술과 같은 물질들이 감각의 세계를 확장하는 역할을 한다고 생각한다.

이 작품은 그러한 디오니소스적 감각의 세계 속에서 자유롭게 어우러지는 인물들을 담고자 했다. 술집은 많은 사람들이 모여 있지만, 그들이 서로 얽혀 있는 것은 아니다. 그러나 같은 공간에서 술과 음식을 즐기며 존재 자체로 서로의 증인이 된다. 사랑방은 이러한 인물들을 통해 술집이라는 공간을 형성하고, 그곳에서 펼쳐지는 감각의 해방과 순간의 연결을 시각적으로 구현하고자 한 작업이다.

The Guest Room

The Guest Room takes its name from a bar I used to frequent in Gongju. The name itself curiously suits a drinking establishment. Alcohol serves as a direct medium that allows people to break free from societal codes. Although I am not a heavy drinker, I believe that substances like alcohol and cigarettes offer a glimpse into a heightened sensory world.

This work aims to capture figures immersed in that Dionysian realm of sensation. In a bar, many people coexist within the same space, yet they are not necessarily connected. However, by sharing drinks and food, they become witnesses to each other’s presence. The Guest Room seeks to create such a space through these figures, visually portraying the liberation of senses and the fleeting connections formed within it.
