2023년 여름, 작가가 고향 친구들과 함께한 단양 여행에서 마주한 도담삼봉을 이름으로 붙인 이 작품은 금강둔치, 예당호에 이어 충청도의 자연을 담아낸 연작 중 하나이다.

도담삼봉은 공간감의 재현을 지양하면서도 후경(後景)에 대한 탐구를 시도한 작업이다. 여기서 말하는 후경이란 원근법이나 명암법을 통한 입체적 공간 구성이 아닌, 색과 형상의 리듬을 통해 앞과 뒤의 조화를 만들어가는 개념으로, 각 요소가 고유한 색과 흐름을 가지면서도 서로 어우러지는 방식, 그것이 이 작품에서 가장 중요한 부분이라 할 수 있다.

화면 속 나무와 소풍을 즐기는 사람들의 모습과 더불어 봉우리와 나무들이 만들어내는 리듬, 그리고 강의 부드러운 흐름이 작품의 본질을 형성한다. 자연의 형태가 지닌 감각적 조화를 시각적 리듬으로 풀어낸 도담삼봉은 단순한 풍경화가 아니라, 보는 이로 하여금 색과 형상이 이루는 새로운 감각을 경험하도록 만들어보고 싶었다.

The Dodamsambong peaks

This work, named after the Dodamsambong Peaks, was inspired by the artist’s trip to Danyang with childhood friends during the summer of 2023. Following The Geumgang Riverside and The Yedang resevoir, it is part of a series capturing the landscapes of Chungcheong Province.

Rather than focusing on spatial representation, The Dodamsambong Peaks explores the concept of the "background" in a unique way. Here, the background is not constructed through perspective or chiaroscuro but through the rhythm of colors and forms, creating a sense of depth through their interplay. Each element retains its distinct color and movement while harmonizing with the whole—this balance is the essence of the work.

The trees, the people enjoying a picnic, the peaks rising in rhythm with the landscape, and the gentle flow of the river all contribute to the work’s foundation. By transforming the organic harmony of nature into a visual rhythm, The Dodamsambong Peaks goes beyond a mere landscape painting, inviting the viewer to experience a new sensory interplay of color and form.
