운동경기는 그림 공부를 위한 작업이었다고 할 수 있다. 운동경기 작품을 만들던 당시에는 운동감이나 텍스처로 형상을 구축하는 방식보다, 터치의 반복을 통해 형태를 만들어내는 것에 관심이 쏠려 있었다. 늘 꿈꿔온 작품 중 하나가 브뤼겔(Pieter Brueghel)처럼 와글와글한 리듬이 살아 있는 장면을 구현하는 것이지만, 이를 온전히 실험하기 위해서는 시간이 필요했고, 이 작품은 그 가능성을 탐색하는 과정에 가깝다는 느낌이 든다. 완전한 시도라기보다는, 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 미리 엿보는 단계라고 볼 수 있다.

운동경기를 다루다 보니 옷을 입지 않은 인물 형상들이 자연스럽게 등장했는데, 이를 표현하는 과정이 꽤 즐거웠던 기억이 있다. 옷을 묘사하는 순간 다시금 구상적인 사고가 개입되는 느낌이 들었지만, 살을 색칠하는 행위는 오히려 형태를 덩어리로 다루는 경험에 가까웠다. 렘브란트나 프란시스 베이컨의 고깃덩어리처럼, 순수한 물질로서의 인간 형상을 탐구하는 과정이었다고도 할 수 있다.

다만, 배경의 구축 방식에 있어서는 아쉬움이 남는다. 인물들과 마찬가지로 배경 역시 ‘만들어진 것’으로서 접근했어야 했지만, 다소 풍경적인 방향으로 흘러가면서 작업의 일관성이 흐트러진 듯하다. 이를 극복하는 과정이 앞으로의 과제일 것이며, 동시에 이 작품이 그 문제의식을 일깨운 계기가 되었다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

The Sports

The Sports can be considered a study in painting. At the time of its creation, my focus was not on constructing forms through movement or texture but rather on shaping figures through repetitive touches. One of my long-held aspirations has been to depict a lively, bustling scene with rhythmic energy, much like Pieter Brueghel. However, fully experimenting with this vision required time, and this work feels more like an exploration of that possibility than a complete attempt—a preliminary glimpse into the direction I aim to pursue.

As I worked on The Sports, I naturally depicted figures without clothing, and I recall greatly enjoying the process. The moment I began painting garments, I felt a return to figurative thinking. However, painting flesh, in contrast, allowed me to engage with form as mass. This became an exploration of the human figure as pure material—akin to the fleshy textures seen in the works of Rembrandt or Francis Bacon.

That said, I do have some regrets about the construction of the background. Just as the figures were "made," the background should have been approached in the same way. However, it leaned more toward a landscape-oriented composition, which disrupted the work’s overall consistency. Overcoming this challenge will be a key task moving forward, and in that sense, this piece holds significance as a moment of realization regarding that issue.
