카니발은 작가가 Two Channel Video 형식을 처음 도입한 작업으로, 두 개의 모니터를 연결하여 선보인다. 축제와 같은 장소는 'Festival'이 아닌 'Carnival'로 이름 붙였다. 이는 Festival과의 차이에서 비롯된다. 두 단어는 모두 '축제'를 의미하지만, Carnival은 카니발리즘(cannibalism)—고대의 원시적 의식에서 유래하며, 무질서와 본능적 감각이 강조된 디오니소스적 축제다. 반면, Festival은 허용된 과잉 속에서 질서와 균형이 유지되는 아폴론적인 축제라 할 수 있다. 이 작품은 형식과 규범을 전복하고, 물질과 감각의 세계를 탐구하는 이념을 담아 카니발이라는 제목을 붙였다.
초기 구상은 토마토 축제에서 출발했으며, 이에 따라 화면 속 공간이 유럽풍의 집처럼 보이기도 한다. 그러나 작업이 진행되면서 공간의 특정한 국적이나 소재보다 형상의 만들어내는 것이 더 중요해졌다. 작품에 등장하는 태극기 깃발은 단순한 상징이 아니라, 색의 조합이 주는 시각적 쾌감에서 비롯되었다. 흰 색은 언제나 작품을 시원하게 만들어주는 듯 하다. 이를 통해 유럽풍 건축과 태극기가 어우러지며 독특한 긴장감을 형성하고, 예상치 못한 감각적 조화를 만들어낸다.
The Carnival
The Carnival marks the artist's first attempt at incorporating the Two Channel Video format, presented through two interconnected monitors. The setting of the piece is named Carnival rather than Festival, emphasizing the distinction between the two. While both words signify a celebration, Carnival originates from cannibalism, an ancient ritualistic practice, and embodies disorder and primal instincts, making it a Dionysian festival. In contrast, Festival represents an Apollonian celebration—an event where excess is permitted within a structured and balanced framework. This work subverts conventional forms and norms, exploring the realms of materiality and sensation, which is why it was aptly titled Carnival.
The initial concept was inspired by a tomato festival, which led to the space in the work resembling European-style houses. However, as the piece developed, the focus shifted from a specific cultural setting to the act of constructing forms. The Taegeukgi flags featured in the work are not mere symbols but were incorporated for the visual pleasure evoked by their color composition. The color white, in particular, always brings a sense of freshness to the work. This juxtaposition of European-style architecture and the Taegeukgi creates a distinctive sense of tension, resulting in an unexpected yet intriguing sensory harmony.
