“구체적인 형상을 통해 부피를 키워 정원과 같은 장소 만들기”. 이는 내가 결정체-이미지를 만들 때 품는 태도이다. 풍경이라 부르고 싶지 않다. 풍경일 수도 있겠지만 풍경이란 말은 어딘가 풍경성이라는 목표지점을 겨냥하고 있는 듯하기 때문일까?

그렇기에 나는 내가 꿈꾸는 정원을 만들 때(작품을 만들 때), 구체적인 형상들을 하나하나 빚고 그것들을 통해 부피를 키워 장소를 만든다. 술집을 그린 드로잉 작품들도 그렇게 만들어진 장소들이다. 굉장히 집중해서 작업했고, 또 끝난 뒤에 작품과 마주했을 때 내가 한 것이라고 믿겨지지 않았다. 나는 그런 작업을 좋아한다. 어떤 이들은 작품이 자식같다고 말하기도 하지만, 나에게 있어 좋은 작업, 즉 만들어진 작품은 볼 때마다 낯섦을 주는, 내가 하지 않은 것 같은 느낌이 드는 작업들이다. ‘홍어’작품 역시 홍어가 있는 식탁이 만들어진 것이다.

작품의 제목들은 25년 천안으로 이사와서 가본 술집들 이름이다. 특히 개코막걸리라 이름붙은 홍어집의 경우, 굉장히 인상적이었기 때문에 홍어가 있는 식탁 또한 만들어보고 싶었다. 나는 담백한 제목이 좋다. 왜냐면 제목이 거창하거나 너무 많은 의미를 내포한다면 관람객들에게 제한된 영역만을 제공하는 듯한 느낌이 들기 때문이다. 술집은 앞으로도 더 만들어보고 싶다.

"Building a place like a garden by increasing volume through concrete shapes." This is the attitude I embrace when creating crystalline images. I don't want to call it a landscape. It could be a landscape, but is the word landscape apparently aiming at the goal of landscape?

That is why when I make my dream garden (when I make a work), I make specific figures one by one and make a place by increasing the volume through them. The drawings depicting the bar are also places that were made in this way. I worked very hard, and when I faced the work after it was over, I couldn't believe I did it. I like that kind of work. Some people say that the work is like a child, but good work for me, that is, the work that is made, is something that feels unfamiliar to me every time I see it. Skate is also a table with skate.

The titles of the works are the names of bars I've been to after moving to Cheonan in 25 years. Especially in the case of a skate restaurant named Gaeko Makgeolli, it was very impressive, so I wanted to make a table with skate. I like the simple title. This is because if the title is grand or has too much meaning, it feels like it is only providing limited areas to visitors. I want to make more bars in the future.
