대상을 지각한다는 것은 곧 막과 막이 맞닿는 사건이다. 우리는 눈의 망막, 코의 비막, 귀의 고막, 혀의 미뢰, 피부의 감각막을 통해 들어온 정보를 뇌에서 조합하여 세계를 인식한다. 이때 지각된 정보를 이해하고 분별하기 위해 정신이 개입한다. 그러나 정신에 고착된 이념이나 선입견이 작동할 때, 우리는 대상을 있는 그대로 바라보지 못하고 왜곡된 방식으로 받아들이게 된다. 그렇기에 작가에게는 불필요한 이념과 선입견을 비워내려는 태도가 필요하다. 동시에 새로운 이념을 꿈꾸고, 다른 눈으로 보고 표현하려는 시도 또한 작가가 놓을 수 없는 과제이자 숙명일 것이다.

이번 Haptic 전시는 이러한 지각의 틀을 전환해 보고자 한다. 고전적인 인식 방식, 즉 대상을 3차원적 구조로 파악하고 해석하려는 태도에서 벗어나 있는 그대로 감각하는 경험을 제안한다. 의미, 상징, 감정 등의 서사적 구조를 앞세우는 대신, 시각적 경험 자체에 집중하며, 관람자가 각자의 상태와 감각에 따라 자유롭게 받아들이고 느끼기를 기대한다. 이 전시에서의 감각은 정해진 이해가 아니라 각자의 방식으로 열리는 지각의 사건에 가깝다.

본 전시는 충남문화관광재단 다원예술지원사업의 일환으로, 김형수 작가가 기획하여 공주시의 갤러리 수리치에서 3인전 형태로 진행된다. 한옥을 개조한 전시 공간 속에서 디지털 디스플레이를 매개로 한 다양한 작품들을 선보인다. 관람객은 VR 기기를 착용해 작가가 구축한 하나의 장소를 체험할 수 있으며, VR 작품 ‘The Objet’은 벽면 프로젝션으로도 상영되어, 기기를 착용하지 않아도 작품의 감각 속으로 들어온 듯한 경험을 제공한다. 또한 참여 작가들이 연구해온 움직이는 회화, 즉 ‘시간-회화(Time-Painting)’ 작업도 함께 소개된다. 브라운관 기반 설치 작업, 인터랙티브 작품, 그리고 김형수 작가의 연필 드로잉 등 다양한 형식의 작업을 만날 수 있다.

To perceive an object is, in essence, an event in which membranes meet. Through the retina of the eye, the nasal membrane, the eardrum, the taste buds of the tongue, and the sensory membranes of the skin, information enters the body and is assembled by the brain, allowing us to recognize the world. In this process, the mind intervenes in order to interpret and distinguish what has been perceived. However, when ideas or preconceptions fixed within the mind begin to operate, we are no longer able to see things as they are, and instead receive them in distorted ways. For this reason, artists must cultivate an attitude of emptying themselves of unnecessary ideas and prejudices. At the same time, the desire to imagine new ideas and to see and express the world through different eyes remains an inescapable task and perhaps the destiny of the artist.

The exhibition Haptic seeks to shift this framework of perception. It proposes an experience of sensing things as they are, moving away from the classical mode of understanding that interprets objects through a three-dimensional structure. Rather than foregrounding narrative structures such as meaning, symbolism, or emotion, the exhibition focuses on the visual experience itself, inviting viewers to receive and feel the works freely according to their own state and sensibility. The sensory experience here is not a fixed interpretation but closer to an event of perception that unfolds in each viewer’s own way.

This exhibition is presented as part of the Chungnam Arts & Culture Foundation’s Interdisciplinary Arts Support Program and is curated by artist Kim Hyeongsoo as a three-person exhibition at Gallery Surichi in Gongju. Within the renovated hanok space, various works mediated through digital displays are presented. Visitors can wear a VR headset to experience a place constructed by the artist, while the VR work The Objet is also projected onto the wall so that viewers without a headset may still feel immersed in the sensory field of the work. In addition, the participating artists present their research on moving painting what they refer to as Time Painting. The exhibition includes a range of formats such as CRT-based installations, interactive works, and pencil drawings by Kim Hyeongsoo.

Through the digital display as a new canvas and material, these works open up sensory experiences that differ from conventional modes of viewing. The exhibition proposes to viewers another layer of perception that digital media can produce, as well as the possibility of a new kind of object (Objet).
