전원주택에 살고 싶어하는 사람은 사실 정원을 갖고 싶다는 마음에서 비롯된 것이 아닐까? 정원은 원하는 대로 만들 수 있다. 나무를 심을 수도 있고, 꽃을 가꿀 수도 있으며, 동물을 키우거나 농사를 지을 수도 있다. 정원을 만들고자 하는 이러한 꿈은 회화에서 무언가를 만들고자 하는 꿈과 닮아 있지 않은가? 나는 이 작품에서 나만의 마당을 만들어보았다. 앞서 제작한 ‘추접도(雛蝶圖)’에서처럼 형상들을 크게 집어넣으면서도, 한층 더 풍성한 느낌을 형성해보고 싶었던 것이다. 이 작품은 곧 나만의 정원이자 마당이다.

무언가를 만들 때 너무나 당연하겠지만, 자연에서 관찰되는 어떤 것도 선택할 수 있음에도 불구하고, 오래된 관습이나 종교적 관념, 혹은 사람들에게 표상으로 여겨져 온 익숙한 개체들이 존재한다. 물론 이러한 개체들을 새롭게 구성할 수도 있겠지만, 작업 도중에도 자꾸만 머릿속에 각인된 코드들이 개입하는 듯한 느낌을 떨치기란 쉽지 않다.

닭은 어떠할까? 익숙한 듯 익숙하지 않다. 익숙함은 아마도 친숙함에서 비롯된 것 같고, 반대로 익숙하지 않다는 것은 닭이 너무나 다양한 방식으로 표현되어왔기 때문일 것이다. 그래서 나는 닭을 좀 더 깊이 연구해보고 싶다.

The Yard

Perhaps the desire to live in a country house is, in truth, a desire to have a garden. A garden can be created in any way one wishes. One may plant trees, cultivate flowers, raise animals, or even farm. The dream of creating such a garden resembles the dream of creating something within painting. In this work, I created my own yard. As in my earlier work ‘The Chujeopdo(雛蝶圖)’, I placed large figures within the surface, but this time I sought to generate a richer feeling. This work is thus my own garden, my own yard.

When making something, it seems natural that one can choose anything observed in nature. Yet there are certain familiar entities that have long been regarded as symbols through custom, religion, or collective perception. Of course, these entities can be reconstructed in new ways, but even in the midst of working, it is not easy to shake off the sense that ingrained codes in the mind are constantly intruding.

What about the chicken? It feels both familiar and unfamiliar. Its familiarity seems to come from its closeness to daily life, while its unfamiliarity may stem from the fact that the chicken has been represented in so many different ways. For this reason, I would like to study the chicken more deeply.
