사람들이 많은 큰 도심은 한때 나에게 새롭고 낯선 장소였다. 지방의 작은 동네에서 나고 자란 탓인지, 서울로 향하는 고속도로 톨게이트만 지나도 어딘가 새로운 세계에 들어선 듯한 설레는 기분이 들었다. 특별히 대단한 무언가를 기대한 것은 아니었지만, 복잡하게 얽힌 사람들, 높고 빽빽한 건물들, 그리고 그곳의 리듬과 속도는 이전에 경험하지 못한 밀도감을 형성하고 있었기 때문이 아닐까? 물론 지금은 익숙해져 버린 탓에 어느 도시에 가더라도 그때의 낯섦을 다시 느끼긴 어렵지만 말이다.

<시가지>는 북적이는 도시의 리듬과 속도를 회화의 표면에서 만들어보고 싶었다. 그렇다고 해서 이전에 느낀 감정을 환기하기 위함이 아니라, 복잡하고 다채로운 리듬을 통해 새롭고 낯선 감각을 만들어보려 함이다. 이 작업을 위해 모니터 4대를 세로로 이어 붙여 병풍처럼 구성했다. 각각의 모니터는 하나의 독립된 화면으로 가능하지만 동시에 전체를 이루는 하나의 표면으로 연결된다. 각 화면의 형상은 따로 떼어볼 수도 있고, 전체적으로 관찰했을 때 또 다른 감각이 발생하기도 한다. 이처럼 <시가지>는 개별성과 전체성이 함께 작동하는 감각적 장소를 만들어보고자 했다. 복잡하고 풍성한 리듬이 화면 위에서 운동하고 진동하며, 화면의 외연을 넘어서는 감각적 경험을, 그 힘을 생성할 수 있기를 바랐다.

The Downtown

For me, a large city crowded with people was once a new and unfamiliar place. Perhaps because I was born and raised in a small provincial town, even just passing through the tollgate on the highway to Seoul gave me the thrilling feeling of entering a new world. I was not particularly expecting something grand, but the entangled crowds, the tall and dense buildings, and the rhythm and speed of the place seemed to form a density I had never experienced before. Of course, now that I have grown accustomed, it is difficult to feel that unfamiliarity again in any city.

The Down Town sought to create the rhythm and speed of a bustling city on the surface of painting. This was not to recall the emotions I once felt, but rather to generate a new and unfamiliar sensation through complex and diverse rhythms. For this work, four monitors were vertically connected and arranged like a folding screen. Each monitor can function as an independent screen, but at the same time they are linked to form one continuous surface. The figures on each screen can be viewed separately, and when observed as a whole, they produce yet another sensation. In this way, The Down Town aimed to construct a sensory place where individuality and totality operate together. The complex and rich rhythms move and vibrate across the surface, and I hoped they could generate a sensory experience, a force that extends beyond the boundaries of the screen.
